“Wait for it” is the only motif I could find that was foreshadowed before being introduced; perhaps fittingly, the audience meets Burr long before we get to understand his motives. Its chord progression happens in both “Aaron Burr, Sir” and “The Story of Tonight (reprise)” before being picked up in “Wait For It.” Hamilton name-drops it in “Room Where It Happens” (“you get love for it, you get hate for it, you get nothing if you wait for it!”) igniting Burr’s transformation into political climber. The ensemble practically shouts it back at Hamilton in “Hurricane,” when he makes the impulsive move that will destroy his life. Finally, the melody returns as Burr looks back regretfully in “The World Was Wide Enough.”
