[ George Washington ] Ladies and gentlemen, you coulda been anywhere in the world tonight, but youâre here with us in New York City. Are you ready for a cabinet meeting???
The issue on the table: Secretary Hamiltonâs plan to assume state debt and establish a national bank. Secretary Jefferson, you have the floor, sir
[ Thomas Jefferson ] âLife, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.â We fought for these ideals; we shouldnât settle for less These are wise words, enterprising men quote âem Donât act surprised, you guys, cuz I wrote âem
[ Thomas Jefferson / James Madison ] Oww
[ Thomas Jefferson ] But Hamilton forgets His plan would have the government assume stateâs debts Now, place your bets as to who that benefits: The very seat of government where Hamilton sits
[ Alexander Hamilton ] Not true!
[ Thomas Jefferson ] Ooh, if the shoe fits, wear it If New Yorkâs in debtâ Why should Virginia bear it? Uh! Our debts are paid, Iâm afraid Donât tax the South cuz we got it made in the shade In Virginia, we plant seeds in the ground We create. You just wanna move our money around This financial plan is an outrageous demand And itâs too many damn pages for any man to understand Stand with me in the land of the free And pray to God we never see Hamiltonâs candidacy Look, when Britain taxed our tea, we got frisky Imagine what gonâ happen when you try to tax our whisky
[ George Washington & CROWD] Thank you, Secretary Jefferson That's my alcohol! Secretary Hamilton, your response
[ Alexander Hamilton ] Thomas. That was a real nice declaration Welcome to the present, weâre running a real nation Would you like to join us, or stay mellow Doinâ whatever the hell it is you do in Monticello? If we assume the debts, the union gets A new line of credit, a financial diuretic How do you not get it? If weâre aggressive and competitive The union gets a boost. Youâd rather give it a sedative? A civics lesson from a slaver. Hey neighbor Your debts are paid cuz you donât pay for labor âWe plant seeds in the South. We create.â Yeah, keep ranting We know whoâs really doing the planting And another thing, Mr. Age of Enlightenment Donât lecture me about the war, you didnât fight in it You think Iâm frightened of you, man? We almost died in the trench While you were off getting high with the French Thomas Jefferson, always hesitant with the President Reticentâthere isnât a plan he doesnât jettison Madison, youâre mad as a hatter, son, take your medicine Damn, youâre in worse shape than the national debt is in Sittinâ there useless as two shits Hey, turn around, bend over, Iâll show you Where my shoe fits
[ George Washington ] Excuse me? Madison, Jefferson, take a walk! Hamilton, take a walk! Weâll reconvene after a brief recess. Hamilton!
[ Alexander Hamilton ] Sir!
[ George Washington ] A word
[ James Madison ] You donât have the votes
[ Thomas Jefferson / James Madison ] You donât have the votes
[ Thomas Jefferson ] Aha-ha-ha ha!
[ Thomas Jefferson / James Madison ] Youâre gonna need congressional approval and you donât have the votes
[ Thomas Jefferson ] Such a blunder sometimes it makes me wonder why I even bring the thunder
[ James Madison ] Why he even brings the thunderâŠ
[ George Washington ] You wanna pull yourself together?
[ Alexander Hamilton] Iâm sorry, these Virginians are birds of a feather
[ George Washington ] Young man, Iâm from Virginia, so watch your mouth
[ Alexander Hamilton ] So we let Congress get held hostage by the South?
[ George Washington ] You need the votes
[ Alexander Hamilton ] No, we need bold strokes. We need this plan
[ George Washington ] No, you need to convince more folks
[ Alexander Hamilton ] James Madison wonât talk to me, thatâs a nonstarter
[ George Washington ] Winning was easy, young man. Governingâs harder
[ Alexander Hamilton ] Theyâre being intransigent
[ George Washington ] You have to find a compromise
[ Alexander Hamilton ] But they donât have a plan, they just hate mine!
[ George Washington ] Convince them otherwise
[ Alexander Hamilton ] What happens if I donât get congressional approval?
[ George Washington ] I imagine theyâll call for your removal
[ Alexander Hamilton ] Sirâ
[ George Washington ] Figure it out, Alexander. Thatâs an order from your commander
Secretary of the Treasury Hamilton and Secretary of State Jefferson engage in a cabinet meeting designated to a discussion of Hamilton's financial plan. Madison and Jefferson get sassy and taunt him, reminding him that for congressional approval he would need the majority of the votes, which he didn't have. Washington pulls him aside during a recess and tells him to cool it, and that though he was worked up he did indeed have to find his votes to avoid removal.
